A video written and edited by myself for Global Refuge and it's CEO discussing climate change and it's impact on immigrant and refugees.
Lakeside Video Script
This week, I had the opportunity to speak at Lakeside Chautauqua, Ohio, on legal pathways for humanitarian protection and how the climate crisis impacts immigrant, refugee, and asylum populations. It was refreshing to be in such a beautiful place with my family, engaging with thoughtful audiences eager to learn and take action.
As we’ve witnessed devastating and extreme climate disasters here in the US in the last week, the topic of climate-driven migration couldn’t be more urgent. 2024 was the hottest year ever recorded, and 90% of refugees now come from countries on the front lines of the climate emergency.
Yet, climate-displaced people still lack explicit protections under international law. And here in the U.S., meaningful progress at the federal level remains a steep uphill battle.
That’s why the work of organizations like Global Refuge - and everyday advocates like you- matters more than ever. Whether it's contacting your representatives, supporting refugee-led groups, or reducing your own carbon footprint, each of us has a role to play.
This challenge is immense, but so too is our capacity for innovation, compassion, and change – let's work together to make sure everyone has a safe place to call home. Thank you to Lakeside for the chance to speak on this urgent issue.
